Joining Shiverbug

Nearly everyone here came in through Teesside University’s placements and internships, and that’s still the main way in. This page explains how it works, and what to do if you’re not at Teesside.

The Teesside route

The process runs through the university rather than through us. When we have a role, we tell Teesside what we’re after. Their Student Futures team advertises it to students on the relevant courses and passes us the CVs and cover letters, and we shortlist and interview from those.

So the useful thing to do is keep an eye on Student Futures and apply there when a Shiverbug role appears. A CV sent straight to us sits outside the process it needs to be inside, which is the only reason we ask you not to.

Who came in this way

Everyone here joined the studio as a Teesside intern.

  • Sarah Childs
  • Connor Milburn
  • Charlie Ashall
  • Oliver Neal
  • Martin Wilkinson
  • Kyle Kerr
  • Megan Nicol
  • Patrick Agwuh

What you’d be doing

Real work on what we’re actually making, credited to you by name. That means Out of Water, and co-development work for other studios when we have it. Interns work in the same project and sit in the same reviews as everyone else.

The honest bit

A studio this size has no separate intern track, no rotation programme and no mentor whose only job is you. You get given real tasks early, because there’s nobody else to give them to.

Some people love that. Some would rather have the structure of a studio with two hundred people in it, and that’s a perfectly reasonable thing to want.

Not at Teesside?

Then there’s no scheme to point you at, but we’d still rather hear from you than not. Use the contact form and send a link to your portfolio, reel or website rather than an attachment.

One thing worth knowing before you spend an evening on it: we’re small, and we aren’t always in a position to take anyone on, however good the work. A message like that is a hello and a bookmark, not an application to a vacancy.
