How Accessible This Site Is

We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the international standard for web accessibility.

Every page on this site meets Level AA as far as our own testing shows. We've assessed this ourselves rather than commissioning an external audit, so if you find something we've missed, we'd genuinely like to know.

What We've Done

Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible outline showing where you are and a skip link so you can jump past the menu. Pages below the home page open with a back button, so there's always one obvious way out that doesn't depend on your browser's. The gallery viewer keeps focus inside itself while open, closes on Esc, and puts you back where you started.

Text meets the 4.5:1 contrast ratio the standard asks for. The site is dark, and it is designed that way rather than dimmed: every colour on it was measured against the surface it actually sits on, including the four brand accents, which are used at full strength only where they clear the bar. Pages reflow to a 320px screen without sideways scrolling, cope with doubled text size and increased letter spacing, and every image either has alternative text or is marked as decorative. Buttons and links are at least 44 by 44 pixels, apart from links inside a sentence, the three contact links in the press kit fact sheet, and the SVG and PNG download links under each logo in the press kit, which are smaller but sit far enough from anything else to be hard to miss.

If your device is set to reduce motion, the scroll animations and the looping gallery clips stop on their own and never start. If it isn't, every looping clip carries its own pause button in the corner of the clip, which stops and restarts that clip.

What Isn't Right Yet

The looping clips in the co-development galleries have no captions. They're silent and carry no spoken or written information, so there's nothing to caption, but they aren't described in as much detail as the still images are. The same goes for the Out of Water clip on the games page: it has a label describing what it shows, and no captions for its audio. The trailer on the press page is a download rather than something that plays on the site; when the new trailer is embedded here it will have captions and a written description of what it shows.

There is no light version of this site. Dark is the studio's house style rather than a setting, so the site does not follow your device's light or dark preference and there is no switch to change it. Light text on a dark background is harder to read for some people, particularly with astigmatism, and we have taken that choice away from you. If that is you, tell us at the address below - it is the kind of thing we would change our mind about.

We've only tested with one screen reader, NVDA on Windows. We haven't tried JAWS or VoiceOver, and they don't always behave the same way. We also haven't tested Windows High Contrast Mode.

How We Tested This

We checked all 24 pages rather than a sample, and contrast was measured on both themes. Heading order, alternative text, form labelling, link naming, target sizes and focus behaviour were measured on every page; keyboard operation and the gallery viewer were tested by hand; and the site was read through with NVDA. This is our own assessment, not an independent audit.

The Legal Bit

Shiverbug Studios Ltd is a private company, so the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 don't apply to us. We still have duties under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments, and we'd want to do this regardless. This statement is voluntary, and written to be honest rather than flattering.
